Cray XMP Supercomputer I/O Subsystem Expansion Tower

This listing is for a Cray XMP Supercomputer I/O Subsystem Expansion tower. This equipment was used with the Cray XMP Supercomputer which was built in the mid 1980's. This tower is not the XMP computer unit itself, but is one of two optional towers that could be added to the XMP system. One available option was the I/O Subsystem Expansion tower and the other option was the SSD Memory Expansion tower. This I/O Subsystem tower is Serial Number 37. A photo of the ID plate is provided below. This tower includes all of the original circuit boards in three of the four columns. The rightmost column is empty. Individual circuit boards can be found selling for as much as $200 each, or more. Included with this tower are the original decorative cover trim panels in blue. These trim panels give the equipment its "artistic" look. This tower is one of the "C-style" designs used by Cray in the Cray-1, Cray-1M, Cray XMP and Cray-2 equipment lines. This is a very rare piece of vintage computer equipment. Just over a hundred XMP systems were manufactured in the 1980's and only a small number of them included the expansion tower options because of the high cost of this type of computer system at the time.

Included with this tower are the two original power supplies which bolted to the base of the tower. The blue vinyl seat cushions and side covers for the power supplies are also included and are the original pieces from Cray. This tower also has the original I/O connection cables intact as can be seen in the photos below, including what appear to be IBM Mainframe Bus and Tag Channel connectors. All trim and attachment hardware that is available will be provided with the tower. There is no gurantee that every trim piece or attachment hardware item is included. The I/O trim pieces shown in the photos is what will be provided with this tower.

The purchase price of this tower is $75,000. This equipment is very rare and very difficult to find. Most of this equipment is now housed in computer and technology museums and is generally not available to the public for purchase. Reasonable offers will be considered.
